The Canal Park Night

POSTED SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 2009

Duluth's Canal Park district has a long and storied history. Besides the construction of the lift bridge and canal, one of its most notable aspects is its near-magical transformation from an aging warehouse center to an entertainment and shopping district during the past 25 years. Today, Canal Park draws thousands of tourists from around the world annually.

As the days grow warmer, Canal Park will once again become a center of activity with both tourists and locals traversing the streets, well into the evening, in search of entertainment, the perfect souvenir, or memorable dining.

Seasonal Confluence - Gooseberry Falls

POSTED SUNDAY, APRIL 12, 2009

Several days of warm weather last month brought down many of the icy formations that normally encapsulate the falls at Gooseberry throughout the winter. Spring seemed imminent. The melting at the falls slowed at the close of the month when temperatures dropped and a storm system dropped over a foot of fresh snow.

The new blanket of snow covered the landscape and the ice formations that had yet to collapse and melt away. The exposed areas of the freely flowing falls was a sure sign that, despite this recent blast of winter, spring will soon take over in its own glory of new vegetation, colorful blossoms, longer days, and progressive warming of the northern hemisphere due to the more direct solar influence.

A plate of ice that once covered the river upstream sat precariously gripped to the edge of the Middle Falls during this brief resurgence of winter.
