Lighthouse Lampshade

Split Rock Lighthouse has been undergoing restoration this spring. No - the black "lampshade" is not part of the lighthouse's restoration but, rather, a means of restoring the nearly 100-year-old clifftop structure. The black shell is actually a netting surrounding a scaffolding structure to aid workers in the restoration project.

The lighthouse lantern room is receiving a fresh coat of black paint (inside and out) as well as resealed glass storm windows. Other buildings on the Split Rock grounds will also undergo renovations throughout the spring and summer.

Oh Deer!

The White-tailed deer is a fairly common sight in the Northwoods and has a wide range, extending over many central and eastern regions of the United States and Canada. It has also been introduced to portions of Scandinavia and the Czech Republic.

The White-tailed deer is so named because of the white color of its tail's underside. When they flee from danger, they often raise their tails, displaying the white half as they run.

This image shows a pair of deer near the Gooseberry Falls visitor center. Several deer were at this location on this cool late-winter day grazing from the feeder's fallen goods and relatively undisturbed by the occasional human passerby.
